Dr. Ato Forson, Richard Jakpa acquitted and discharged by Court of Appeal

It has emerged that by a majority of 2:1 decision, the Minority Leader
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa have been acquitted and discharged. The order for the former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson to open his defence has also been set aside.

In a 2-1 majority ruling, the Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, former Deputy Minister for Finance, and businessman Richard Jakpa. The panel of three judges found that the decision made by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe on March 30, 2023, requiring the accused to open their defense was erroneous. Justices Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo and Philip Bright Mensah granted the request for acquittal, while Justice Poku Acheampong, the presiding judge, dismissed their request. This decision by the Court of Appeal means that Dr. Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa are now free.

The two had been charged with allegedly causing financial loss of €2.37 million to the State in a deal to procure ambulances for the Government of Ghana.
