Dr. Da Costa Aboagye appointed NHIA CEO

President Akufo-Addo has chosen Dr. Da Costa Aboagye, the Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service, as the new Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Dr. Aboagye replaces Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, who has been nominated as a Minister of Health.

The appointment was made in accordance with Section 14 (1) of the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852). Dr. Aboagye has been given fourteen days to confirm his acceptance of the appointment.

The National Health Insurance Authority was established under the National Health Insurance Act of 2003 with the goal of achieving universal health insurance coverage for residents of Ghana and visitors to the country.

Dr. Da Costa Aboagye holds a PhD in National Health Insurance Scheme in Ghana, a Master’s degree in Public Health and Health Promotion, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He has extensive experience in National Health Insurance Finance, Public Health, and Health Promotion, including leadership in Ghana’s risk communication efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Aboagye has held various leadership roles in academia and within the ECOWAS and Africa CDC communities, promoting best practices in health system strengthening and knowledge exchange. He has also received several awards for his contributions to healthcare in Ghana.
