Eid al-Fitr: Mahama promises extra holiday
Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer has promised that if elected in 2024, he will grant the Muslims in Ghana an extra day off for Eid. He acknowledged the concern that some Muslims miss out on the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to uncertainties in moon sightings.
Speaking at the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on December 29th, H.E Mahama assured that this adjustment would not negatively impact productivity. He emphasized the intention to change the Public Holidays Act in order to maintain the overall number of public holidays in Ghana.
He stated, “We want to address the issue where some of our Muslim community members are unable to enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sighting. To accomplish this, we will introduce an additional holiday for the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. However, we will make sure that this does not affect productivity by modifying the Public Holidays Act and keeping the same number of public holidays per year in Ghana”.
