Election-related deaths in 2020, 2024: Mahama demands update from IGP
Former President John Dramani Mahama has instructed his Executive Secretary to formally request an update from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the ongoing investigations into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice. He disclosed that he had tasked his Executive Secretary with writing to the IGP to seek an update on the investigations, emphasizing the need for action to be taken.
Mahama stressed that the purpose of the inquiry is to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths and to ensure accountability for those responsible.
“This is not the first time. In 2020, we know that eight of our citizens were killed. If these deaths continue and justice is not served, it creates an atmosphere of impunity. As a party, we have consistently called for an investigation to determine what led to these killings, so we can prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
Furthermore, Mahama assured that efforts would be made to secure fair and adequate compensation for the victims’ families. He added that once the new Attorney General takes office, they will work to determine the appropriate reparations for those affected.
“We will also request the new Attorney General, once in office, to assess and ensure fair compensation for the families of those who lost their lives,” Mahama concluded.
