Ex-Minerals Commission Boss sues Paul Adom-Otchere for ¢40m over defamation
Dr. Tony Aubynn, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Commission, Ghana has filed a defamation lawsuit against Paul Adom-Otchere, the host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV. The legal action, filed on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, also includes Ignite Media Group as a co-defendant.
In his statement of claim, Dr. Aubynn, who serves as the Abakoma-Akyempimhene of the Damang-Wassa Division within the Fiase Traditional Area in the Western Region, accuses Mr. Adom-Otchere of falsely accusing him in a viral video on September 10 of encouraging illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
Dr. Aubynn argues that these allegations are defamatory and were deliberately made to damage his public reputation. He is seeking a court order for Mr. Adom-Otchere to publicly retract the statements and issue an unqualified apology through the same media platforms where the defamatory remarks were made.
In addition, Dr. Aubynn is requesting a permanent injunction to prevent the defendants and their associates from making any further defamatory statements about him.
The lawsuit seeks GH¢30 million in general damages, citing harm to his reputation by portraying him as dishonest, self-serving, corrupt, unpatriotic, and immoral. Dr. Aubynn contends that the false accusations have led to widespread public ridicule.
The plaintiff is also demanding GH¢10 million in punitive and exemplary damages from the defendants.
