Former Sports Minister Mustapha Ahmed dies at 63

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, has passed away at 63 years old. The sad news came on Wednesday, February 7. In response, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), conveyed the party’s condolences to Dr. Ahmed’s family. He expressed his shock and emphasized Dr. Ahmed’s dedication to Ghana, extending the deepest sympathies on behalf of the NDC.

Dr. Ahmed served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso North Constituency from 2001 to 2016. He was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports in March 2015 during his tenure as an MP, replacing Mahama Ayariga. However, Dr. Ahmed was later replaced by Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye in a cabinet reshuffle.

In a separate incident last year, Dr. Ahmed faced legal trouble when he was sentenced to seven days in prison for contempt of court. He had disregarded instructions to avoid a particular plot of land and was consequently fined GH¢12,000.
