Galamsey: Organised labour declares strike from Oct 10

From October 10, 2024, a significant number of Ghanaian workers are expected to stay away from work after the Trades Union Congress (TUC) announced a nationwide strike. The TUC cited the government’s failure to comply with their demand to cease all mining activities in forest reserves as the reason for the strike.

Recently, the TUC had given three main requests, which included the immediate removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves and areas surrounding water bodies. They also requested for law enforcement agencies to take action and eliminate or destroy any mining equipment near river bodies and within forest reserves.

The decision to strike comes after public outcry following investigative reports showing the pollution of river bodies due to illegal mining activities. The TUC claims the government has not taken any action despite their ultimatum.

Joshua Ansah, the Secretary General of the TUC, emphasized the group’s determination to proceed with the strike starting from October 10, 2024.
