Galamsey: TUTAG declares strike

The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has announced its intention to strike in response to the ongoing illegal mining crisis, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

This decision comes after Organised Labour ended a nationwide strike following government intervention. In a statement on October 10, TUTAG expressed concern over Organised Labour’s withdrawal from the strike without consulting its members.

TUTAG condemned this unilateral action, stating it undermines the unity and collective strength of the labour movement. They emphasized that the decision to halt the strike missed a crucial opportunity to address a significant environmental issue.

The association asserted that the fight against galamsey is a national responsibility that should not be compromised by inconsistent actions within Organised Labour. TUTAG criticized this missed chance for a united front against environmental degradation and expressed solidarity with other unions taking action.

In an Emergency Congress on October 10, 2024, TUTAG resolved to proceed with strike actions and is preparing to invoke its rights under the Labour Act.

TUTAG is calling on the government to:

1. Recall Parliament and revoke Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which governs mining licenses in environmentally sensitive areas.

2. Halt new mining licenses and withdraw those granted in forest reserves and near water bodies.

3. Ban all mining activities in these critical areas and declare a state of emergency.

4. Recall licenses for small-scale mining and engage in bipartisan discussions for sustainable practices.

5. Reclaim lands damaged by mining activities.

6. Increase funding for the Ghana Water Company to address water supply issues caused by illegal mining.

7. Ensure all political parties commit to long-term sustainability measures against galamsey.

TUTAG urged the government and all stakeholders to act swiftly to protect the environment and restore public trust in leadership. They encouraged their members to remain calm and committed as they pursue these demands.
