GAMLS calls for system upgrade in allied health sector

President of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani has called for total upgrade of laboratories in the country to enhance operations whilst meeting global standards.

According to him, system upgrade coupled with making good use of skills of allied health professionals is crucial to scale up the training of future practitioners.

Speaking at the induction and oath swearing ceremony for newly qualified allied health graduates on Tuesday 9 November 2021 in Accra, GAMLS President Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani called on government to “upgrade labs, there should be job placement for qualified allied health professionals after housemanship and licensure examinations. We want Allied Health Professions Council to ensure that challenges facing the MLSD programme is resolved whilst working to give recognition and full meaning to the course “.

The induction and oath swearing ceremony for newly qualified allied health graduates was on the theme “Effective Management of Covid-19: The role of the Allied Health Professional”.

The six-year Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science course is currently being offered by only the University of Deveopment Studies.

In view of this, GAMLS President Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani has appealed to the book runners of various public universities in Ghana as recommended by West African Health Organisation (WAHO).

For Dr. Abu Rahamani ” KNUST, University of Ghana, UCC and other universities should start offering Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science Course to train more professionals”.

Contributing to the debate, General Secretary of GALMS Solomon Dzidzornu Kwashie said “Apart from system upgrade in the allied health sector, efforts must be made to consistently place lab scientists where they belong to enhance the exhibition of professional competence needed for standards”.
