GAMLS marks IBLS Day

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, along with medical laboratory professionals worldwide, is celebrating International Medical Laboratory Science Day today, Monday, 15 April 2024. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the crucial role Medical Laboratory Scientists play in providing healthcare.

The global theme for this year’s celebration, “Guardians of Quality and Patient Safety: Biomedical Laboratory Scientists”, was chosen by the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) to address health issues globally and support the United Nations (UN) and World Health Organization’s (WHO) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists emphasized the importance of effective regulatory and professional development practices in order to achieve the full potential of Medical Laboratory Scientists. They called on authorities to amend laws to improve regulation for patient safety and quality diagnostic services, as well as to establish a Ghana College of Medical Laboratory Science to promote specialization and enhance patient care.

The association also highlighted the need for increased opportunities for professionals in various sectors, including the healthcare industry and manufacturing sector, where collaboration with Medical Laboratory Scientists could lead to job creation and foreign exchange earnings through exports.

Commending the government’s Agenda 111 Project, the association urged project managers to welcome their professional input to ensure that medical laboratory facilities meet international standards and enhance patient care. They reassured the public that medical laboratory professionals in Ghana are dedicated to providing quality care and are willing to work with all stakeholders to improve patient outcomes.
