Director of Technical Coordination at the Health Ministry, Hafiz Adam, has emphasized the urgent need for significant investment in laboratory science in Ghana.

During the Golden Jubilee Anniversary Book Launch of “A History of Medical Laboratory Science in Ghana,” Hafiz Adam, represented by the Acting Director of Pharmacy, Mr. Saviour Yevutsey, highlighted the importance of continued investment in medical laboratory science. He stated, “As we move forward, we recognize the necessity of enhancing infrastructure, upgrading equipment, and providing ongoing training for our healthcare professionals.”

Adam affirmed the Health Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers, to improve the laboratory sector. He remarked, “Together, we can create a robust and sustainable healthcare system that benefits all Ghanaians. We hope the book we are launching today will document the Ministry’s and stakeholders’ efforts.”

The book chronicles the evolution of laboratory science in Ghana, tracing its journey from modest beginnings to its current state of excellence.

Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani, President of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), acknowledged the pioneers who contributed to the profession’s progress, stating, “We honor the dedication, resilience, and innovative spirit that have shaped our field. We recognize the early challenges marked by limited resources and pay tribute to those who established the first laboratory facilities in James Town, Accra.”

He also stressed the importance of acknowledging those involved in producing the book, saying, “As we launch this history, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing education, advocating for better healthcare policies, and mentoring the next generation. Special thanks go to Evg. Dr. Akuetherh Amarh and all contributors and supporters.”

During the first reading, Hudson Afadi Larbi, Chairman of the Council of Elders, emphasized the book’s significance, recommending it to every health professional. Former GAMLS President Dr. Prince Amuzu Sodoke recognized the need for ongoing education in the field, praising the introduction of the Doctor of Medical Laboratory program at UDS, which is acknowledged by WAHO.

Dr. Okara, Registrar of the West African  Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Scientists, commended GAMLS for its role in producing the book, while Dr. David Sebbie Sackey, Board Chairman of the Society of Medical Laboratory Managers Ghana, praised GAMLS for commemorating the history of the laboratory profession in Ghana.

Evg. Dr. Jacob Akuetteh Amarh, the book’s author, stated that the book outlines the development of laboratory practice in Ghana.

Minister of Health Dr. Okoe Boye, represented by Mr. Yevutsey, commended GAMLS for their efforts and promised collaboration with stakeholders to foster a sustainable health sector. He called for the book to be made available to all students, highlighting its significance in showcasing accomplishments.

GAMLS urged the Ministry of Health to formulate policies that enhance laboratory practices and establish a dedicated college for the profession, with consensus that the book would serve as a textbook for health students.
