Ghana awaits SC verdict on anti-gay bill before any action –Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reassured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights despite the recent passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

During a diplomatic engagement, the President emphasized Ghana’s steadfast dedication to respecting human rights and the rule of law.

He stated that the Bill is currently being challenged at the Supreme Court, and until a verdict is reached, no actions will be taken by his government regarding the private Member’s bill.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the Bill has not yet been presented to him for formal action.

He mentioned that any decision he makes concerning the Bill will depend on the Supreme Court’s ruling on the lawsuit filed against it.

The President also highlighted that the controversial legislation, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ activities and prohibits their advocacy, promotion, and funding.

Under the law, individuals convicted of such acts may face imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting or supporting these activities could be sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison.

The passage of the bill has attracted criticism from various quarters, including Virginia Evelyn Palmer, the Ambassador of the United States to Ghana.
