Ghana Gas responds to concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV

Ghana National Gas Limited (Ghana Gas) has officially responded to the concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV, Chief of Ngalekyi, regarding the company’s operations. The statement, issued today, outlines Ghana Gas’s position on several key issues raised by the Chief, with a focus on transparency, community engagement, and responsible business practices.

Compensation for affected landowners

Ghana Gas refutes the allegations made by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV regarding compensation for landowners affected by the company’s activities. According to the statement, all landowners with valid documentation have received compensation in accordance with Ghana Gas’s protocols. The company clarified that there are ongoing litigation cases that have delayed compensation for some parties, but assures that efforts are in place to resolve these cases and ensure fair treatment for all affected individuals.

Flaring activities and environmental impact

In response to claims that flaring activities could harm the health and longevity of community members, Ghana Gas categorically denied such allegations. The company emphasized that no scientific evidence supports the assertion that flaring reduces the lifespan of community members. Ghana Gas highlighted its commitment to international standards, including ISO certifications, which ensure environmental protection and the health and safety of both employees and the surrounding communities. The company referenced a positive Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report as further proof of its commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.

Gas pricing

Addressing concerns regarding gas pricing, Ghana Gas clarified that it does not set gas prices. The responsibility for gas pricing lies with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). While Ghana Gas does not directly influence pricing, the company expressed its willingness to advocate for reduced gas prices where possible, aligning itself with the broader concerns of the public and community welfare.

Employment opportunities for local communities

Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV raised concerns about employment opportunities for local communities, and Ghana Gas acknowledged these concerns in its official response. Under the leadership of its new CEO, Ms. Judith Adjobah Blay, Ghana Gas is committed to developing a strategy aimed at addressing unemployment in the catchment areas where the company operates. The new strategy is designed to align with the President’s national agenda on job creation and will be communicated to communities in due course. Ghana Gas is optimistic that this initiative will bring much-needed employment opportunities to local residents.

Impact on fishing activities

Ghana Gas also responded to concerns about the potential negative impact of its offshore activities on local fishing practices. The company assured the public that its pipelines, which are laid under the seabed, do not obstruct fishing activities. Ghana Gas emphasized that less than 1% of the area is occupied by its offshore activities, leaving plenty of space for fishermen to continue their work. The company reminded the community that international best practices suggest fishermen avoid marked perimeters around offshore infrastructure, a practice that ensures both safety and continued access to fishing grounds.

Commitment to transparency

Ghana Gas concluded its response by reaffirming its commitment to maintaining transparent operations and engaging constructively with local communities. The company stated that it hopes this official statement will address the concerns raised by Nana Morkeh Kpanyinli IV and demonstrate Ghana Gas’s unwavering dedication to corporate responsibility, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
