Ghana National Gas Limited Company’s new Board embarks on familiarization tour
New leadership hits the ground running
In a show of renewed energy and oversight, the newly constituted Board of Directors of the Ghana National Gas Limited Company, chaired by Hon. Kofi Totobi Quakyi, embarked on a two-day familiarization tour across the Western Region. This move marks a strong start to the Board’s tenure, signaling a hands-on approach to governance and a clear commitment to aligning with the strategic development goals of the energy sector.
The tour commenced on Thursday, May 22, 2025, with the team’s primary focus being the Ghana Gas Processing Plant (GPP1) in Atuabo—an operational hub central to the nation’s energy infrastructure.
From Boardroom to the field: Understanding ground realities
Before hitting the road, the Board engaged with departmental heads to gain a nuanced understanding of Ghana Gas’s current state. This preparatory meeting laid the groundwork for more informed observations and assessments during the tour.
One of the notable early stops was a courtesy call on Nsein Paramount Chief, Awulae Agyenfi Kwame, who also serves as a Board member. The gesture underscored the Board’s respect for traditional leadership and its role in corporate and community synergy.
Spotlight on dormant and stalled projects
The tour brought to light some long-standing issues that need urgent attention. The Board visited the stalled LPG Gas Bottling Plant at Axim and held detailed discussions about its future. However, what drew the most attention was the Trauma Center—fully built and fitted with modern machinery, yet still non-operational.
The Board, visibly surprised, expressed concern over the lack of action since the facility’s construction, which was funded under the $1 billion loan from the late Prof. Mills/Mahama Administration in 2011. Hon. Totobi Quakyi and his team pledged swift action, promising to operationalize the facility within weeks.
Investing in people: Accommodation and health infrastructure
In addition to plant visits, the team inspected the completed but yet-to-be-furnished Gas Lodge—a residential facility meant for senior staff and management. The Board emphasized the importance of staff welfare and committed to expediting its furnishing and use.
Another high point of the tour was the inspection of a 20-bed mini hospital under construction at Ayinasi. Fully funded by Ghana Gas, the hospital symbolizes the company’s growing footprint in community development. The Board praised the technical team at GPP1 for their dedication to operating the intricate gas plant for over a decade, often under challenging conditions.
A pledge to reset and rebuild
The tour concluded at the Ghana Gas complex with a staff durbar, where employees pledged their full support to the new Board. In return, the leadership reaffirmed their commitment to President John Dramani Mahama’s “reset agenda”—a vision that seeks to reduce waste and bolster revenue to support national projects, including the anticipated GPP2 expansion.
Day two in Prestea and Sekondi-Takoradi
The tour’s second leg is set to cover strategic facilities in Prestea and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, including a visit to the Prestea Regulatory and Metering Station (PRMS). As the Board continues its inspection, stakeholders across the sector are watching closely, hopeful that this proactive engagement will translate into real progress for Ghana’s gas industry.
