Ghana’s customs are against same-sex marriage –former CJ

During an interview on Metro TV, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo shared her perspective on the ongoing LGBTQ+ rights debate in Ghana. While acknowledging the importance of preserving Ghana’s traditions and customs, she also advocated for respectful dialogue and inclusivity.

She stated, “As Ghanaians, we have our own traditions and customs, which, to my knowledge, do not include same-sex marriage in the 75 years of my life.”

She expressed her disapproval of men marrying men or women marrying women, as it contradicts Ghana’s cultural norms. It is important to note that Ghanaian lawmakers have been discussing a bill since August 2021, aiming to criminalize same-sex relations, transgender identities, and advocating for LGBTQ rights.

This bill, referred to as the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, has received support from many MPs in Ghana, proposing jail sentences of up to 10 years for those advocating for LGBTQ rights. Religious and traditional leaders are also backing the bill, which includes prosecution for publishing content that supports LGBTQ individuals or challenges traditional gender identities.
