Guinea junta bars its members from next elections

Guinea’s tactical junta led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya has banished its members from running for the next elections that will return the suspended Francophone ECOWAS member state to a constitutional rule.

It came as the junta declared on Monday 27 September 2021 a temporary transitional arrangement that affirmed military coup leader Col. Mamady Doumbouya as the president following the overthrow of Alpha Conde recently.

The new arrangement also set up administration headed by a non military personnel as Prime Minister and a
national transitional council that will temporarily act as a parliament.

The council will have 81 individuals selected from society including business pioneers, political parties, religious associations, diplomats and professional associations. They are also barred from running in the upcoming local and national elections.

A minimum 30% of the members of the transitional council should be female, and will incorporate a president and two VPs.

The chamber will settle on the length of the period in which it will administer before an election or political decision can be held to introduce civilian or a popularity based government.

The junta has been holding talks as of late with individuals from varying backgrounds to assemble an agreement on the nation’s future – including a time span for a return to a constitutional rule.

A world class military unit headed by Col. Doumbouya held onto power on 5 September, 2021 accusing regime under ousted Alpha economic mismanagement, human rights abuse including denial of basic liberties where political opponents were unjustifiably imprisoned and graft.
