GTEC urges UTAG to suspend strike

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)  has urged University Teachers Association (UTAG) to suspend strike and resume work.

UTAG, Senior Staff Association of University of Ghana (SSA-UG) and Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) declared a full-blown industrial action over worsening conditions of service.

The nationwide strike has frozen academic activities on the campuses of 16 universities in Ghana, leaving students stranded with many complaining that the total laid down of tools will throw the academic calendar out of gear.

National Labour Commission has secured a court order to compel striking labour unions to return to classrooms but UTAG leadership says it not possible for lecturers including professors in the 16 universities in Ghana to be instructed to immediately resume work without first resolving their grievances.

President of UTAG Prof. Charles Marfo said “I have not declared any strike… so go and tell members in the over 16 universities, some of whom are professors to return to classroom without taking urgent steps to address their conditions of service”.

But, with the strike biting harder and has lost placed an embargo on academic activities on campus, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)  is appealing to striking lecturers to return to the classroom pending resolution of their concerns.
