Haruna Iddrisu fights Speaker over constitutional breaches
Haruna Iddrisu, the former Minority Leader in Parliament, has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of violating the 1992 Constitution when re-composing the Parliamentary Service Board. He alleged that the Speaker did not follow Article 124 of the Constitution, which requires the establishment of a committee to advise the Speaker on reconstituting the board after changes in the Minority leadership last year.
During the formation of a committee to advise the Speaker on re-composing the board after changes in the Majority leadership, the Tamale South lawmaker criticized the prolonged absence of the reconstituted board under Bagbin’s leadership. He stressed the importance of following the Constitution, even for Speaker Bagbin.
Haruna Iddrisu raised concerns about the Speaker’s actions, stating that the changes in the Minority leadership had occurred over a year ago, and questioned what the Parliamentary Service Board had been doing during this time without proper re-composition under Bagbin’s leadership.
In response to Iddrisu’s claims, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin argued that Speaker Bagbin had followed due process in re-composing the Parliamentary Service Board. He disagreed with Iddrisu’s assertion that Bagbin had breached the Constitution, stating that the necessary steps had been taken when the former Minority Leader left his position.
