Haruna Iddrisu wants Majority MPs going independent to vacate seats

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has announced that his party plans to invoke Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution to urge their Majority counterparts running as independent parliamentary candidates to resign from their parliamentary seats ahead of December 7 elections. This move follows the declaration by four members, including former Minister of State Cynthia Morrison and the MP for Agona West, that they will run for re-election as independent candidates.

Article 97(1)(g) stipulates that a Member of Parliament must vacate their seat if they leave their party to join another or choose to remain in Parliament as an independent. If the Minority successfully enforces this article, it could impact the ruling NPP’s majority in Parliament until new elections are held in those constituencies to fill the resulting vacancies.
