Herbert Krapa appointed Board Chairman of ECG

President Akufo-Addo has appointed Deputy Minister for Energy, Herbert Krapa, as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Keli Gadzekpo, who has chaired ECG since 2017, submitted his resignation to President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 26 March 2024, with an effective date of Tuesday, 9 April 2024.

Despite his new role, Mr. Krapa will continue serving as Deputy Minister for Energy. His appointment comes at a critical time as Ghana is facing power supply challenges that the President is committed to resolving swiftly.

Mr. Krapa is expected to provide leadership to the ECG board, ensuring coordination within the power sector for stable electricity supply to Ghanaian consumers.

The President has expressed discontent with the recent power situation and tensions between ECG, the Ministry of Energy, and other key agencies, including GRIDCO, VRA, and Ghana Gas.

Efforts are being made to address issues such as VRA prioritizing power exports over local supply, which has contributed to unreliable electricity provision. President Akufo-Addo has emphasized the need to prioritize the domestic power market in upcoming meetings with energy sector stakeholders.

The appointment of a deputy minister as Chairman of ECG aims to improve coordination among sector agencies and strengthen communication between ECG and the Ministry of Energy.

As Ghana Gas plans a maintenance shutdown in April, all parties are urged to work together to minimize any negative impact on power supply.
