On Thursday, Kenya’s President William Ruto appointed Maj Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed as the first female commander of the air force in response to the recent helicopter crash that led to the loss of the military chief and others, prompting the need for new leadership.
In addition to Maj Gen Ahmed’s appointment, other leaders were also appointed, including Gen Charles Kahariri as the new head of the armed forces, filling the position left vacant by the late military chief.
Maj Gen Ahmed has broken gender barriers throughout her career, achieving the ranks of brigadier and major general in a male-dominated military leadership. She began her military journey in 1983 with the Women Service Corps before being integrated into the main military services in 1999, providing more opportunities for women to excel.
President Uhuru Kenyatta commended Maj Gen Ahmed as a positive role model for women in the country during her promotion to major general in 2018, encouraging her to show that there are no limits for women in any profession.
Despite facing discouragement from some family members, Maj Gen Ahmed’s determination and resilience have led her to succeed and become an inspiration for women nationwide. Her dedication to her uncle’s military values of discipline and hard work has shaped her journey through the ranks, demonstrating significant progress towards gender equality in the armed forces.
