📖 Lighting the torch of learning in Old Tafo: The Nana Asantewaa Library and Educational Videos Center
🌍 A vision rooted in heritage, built for the future
In the historic town of Old Tafo, Kumasi, a beacon of education stands tall — The Nana Asantewaa Library and Educational Videos Center. Inspired by the iconic Yaa Asantewaa, a fearless warrior queen and symbol of empowerment, this library is more than just a building filled with books. It is a community anchor, a center for free education, and a life-changing initiative launched by Nana Akwasi Dabankah Jumfuoh, a Ghanaian based in Chicago, USA.
“This is my little contribution to Ghana’s educational and economic development,” Nana Akwasi explains. “I call it the PROJECT — a mission to uplift, educate, and empower.”
📸 A library in action: Founder becomes the first teacher
Photos from the center show Nana Akwasi himself, dressed in traditional attire, actively teaching Math, Science, English, French, Spanish, and even Latin to local schoolchildren. In another scene, he is seen facilitating writing classes, patiently engaging each student. The vibrant interior of the library glows with promise — clean, modern, and stocked with books that few children in the region have ever had access to.
“I taught nurses and elementary school children free of charge,” Nana Akwasi shared. “They deserve access to world-class education, regardless of their background.”
🩺 Teaching the unconventional: Math & Research for Nursing Students
The library isn’t just for children. In a groundbreaking and non-conventional move, the center has hosted nursing students from Agona Asamang Nursing Training School, providing free instruction in Mathematics, Statistics, and Research Methods — essential skills for modern healthcare professionals.
“This is what we mean by a multi-purpose library,” Nana Akwasi proudly says. “We are building a smarter, healthier Ghana — starting here in Ashanti.”
💻 A beautiful library without a single computer
Despite the progress, one painful reality remains: the library has no computers. “Not even a single laptop,” says Nana Akwasi. “The structure is there. The books are there. The passion is there. But the digital tools are missing.”
With the goal of turning the center into a fully digital, multimedia learning hub, Nana Akwasi is appealing to philanthropists, corporate donors, and international development partners.
“I need your help,” he pleads. “The children are not using this beautiful library to its full potential because they lack access to the very tools the modern world requires.”
🧭 The “PROJECT”: Building Legacy, One Child at a Time
At the heart of Nana Akwasi’s mission lies something deeper than just building a facility. He calls it “the PROJECT” — a long-term educational vision that includes:
- Expanding the library into a digital resource hub
- Hosting multimedia educational video sessions
- Offering structured classes aligned with Ghana’s curriculum
- Creating outreach programs for surrounding rural communities
“It’s not just about books,” he adds. “It’s about giving Ghana’s children the tools to think, create, innovate, and lead.”
