Mahama appoints 15 new envoys to represent Ghana abroad

In a significant diplomatic reshuffle aimed at strengthening Ghana’s international presence, President John Dramani Mahama has nominated 15 individuals to serve as Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and Consul-Generals in key nations across the world.

The announcement, made through an official letter dated June 10, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., follows extensive consultations with the Council of State. The move is widely viewed as part of the President’s strategy to deepen bilateral and multilateral relationships in a rapidly shifting global landscape.

Diverse appointments reflect strategic priorities

The appointments reflect a deliberate strategy to position experienced individuals in countries that are crucial to Ghana’s foreign policy and economic development agenda. The nominees include seasoned politicians, diplomats, academics, and public servants, chosen for their track records and sectoral expertise.

Among the notable appointees are:

  • Benjamin A. Quashie – Ambassador-designate to the Republic of South Africa
  • Kojo Bonsu – High Commissioner-designate to the People’s Republic of China
  • Kulsoume Sinare Baffoe – Ambassador-designate to the Kingdom of Spain
  • Prof. Ohene Adjei – Ambassador-designate to the Federal Republic of Germany
  • Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, Ph.D. – High Commissioner-designate to Canada

These strategic destinations highlight Ghana’s focus on engaging both established and emerging powers, while also reinforcing ties within Africa and the diaspora.

Political figures and academics lead the pack

The list includes a blend of political veterans and academic leaders. Former Member of Parliament Hon. Captain George Kofi Nfojoh has been nominated to represent Ghana in Togo, a key neighbour in the sub-region. Meanwhile, Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso, former Vice Chancellor of KNUST, has been nominated for India, reflecting an emphasis on educational and technological cooperation.

Other academic heavyweights such as Dr. Margaret Miewien Chebere (Denmark) and Dr. Felix Kumah Godwin Anebo (Senegal) bring scholarly insight to Ghana’s diplomacy, expected to enhance policy depth and global cooperation in education, health, and research.

Strengthening ties in the Gulf and Latin America

Two separate nominations to the United Arab Emirates signal an increasing interest in the Gulf region. Hammed Rashid Tunde Ali and Grace El Mahmoud Marabe are designated for Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively, underlining Ghana’s ambition to tap into Gulf investment, trade, and tourism.

Meanwhile, Nii Amasah Namoale, former MP and Deputy Minister, is headed to Brazil, a fellow Lusophone regional leader and an important player in South-South cooperation.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate transition

According to the letter from the Office of the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has been tasked with facilitating the appointment and deployment processes for the nominees. This includes ensuring smooth transitions in the respective missions and providing all required diplomatic clearances and accreditations.

The appointments come at a time when Ghana is seeking to bolster trade, security, education, and diaspora engagement through its missions abroad. Analysts believe that the new wave of envoys could rejuvenate Ghana’s foreign service with fresh perspectives and renewed commitment to national interest.
