Mahama has done very well in his honeymoon period –Prof. Adei

Renowned Economist and former Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Professor Stephen Adei, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his performance during the first 100 days of his presidency.

In an interview on JoyNews monitored by African Editors, Thursday, March 6, Prof. Adei highlighted that Mahama’s early months in office have been commendable.

Drawing comparisons with previous administrations since Ghana’s independence, he stated:

“His Excellency, the President, has performed admirably in his first 100 days. While I was too young to observe Nkrumah’s first 100 days, I was in my final year of training college when he was overthrown. Since then, I have closely followed the early days of each administration, and I would rate Mahama highly for his achievements,” Prof. Adei remarked.

However, he emphasized that the real test of leadership comes after the honeymoon period, when difficult economic decisions are required to stabilize the economy and foster long-term growth.

“This is the honeymoon phase, and I would give him a strong rating. But the true challenge lies in stabilizing the economy, generating revenue, and addressing critical issues such as Ghana’s underutilized mineral resources and the fight against illegal mining (galamsey),” he explained.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Prof. Adei expressed optimism for President Mahama’s continued progress, stating, “So far, he has done very well, and we wish him the best because Ghana cannot afford to keep resetting its agenda.”
