Mahama promises reliable energy to power 24-hr economy policy

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to establish a reliable and efficient power system to support his proposed 24-hour economy initiative if elected.

This plan is intended to create an environment where businesses and services are available to consumers at all times, promoting economic growth and increasing productivity.

During a meeting with energy sector stakeholders in Accra, Mahama reiterated his dedication to expanding clean energy as part of a larger energy transition strategy.

He stressed that his government would align power generation with projected demand and address reserve needs to ensure a steady, uninterrupted power supply.

Furthermore, Mahama pledged to raise the percentage of clean energy in the country’s power generation mix to 10% through a combination of financial and regulatory incentives.

He also committed to implementing a time-of-use tariff structure to offer businesses affordable and reliable power, enabling them to operate continuously day and night.

Mahama also assured that ESLA revenues would be managed transparently and that the cash waterfall mechanism would be strictly followed to uphold accountability in the energy sector.

Additionally, he promised to lower technical and commercial losses in the energy system by collaborating with local entrepreneurs to enhance efficiency and reliability.

He stated, “We will strategically match power generation with predicted demand and handle reserve needs. Our new administration will increase the consumption of clean energy in line with our energy transition plan and provide the necessary financial and regulatory incentives to achieve a 10% share of non-hydro renewable energy in our generation mix.

Ex-President Mahama noted that “Other important measures will include the implementation of a time-of-use tariff to provide affordable and reliable electricity for businesses to operate 24/7.”

“We will also transparently manage ESLA revenues and strictly adhere to the cash waterfall principles, significantly decrease technical distribution and commercial losses in the energy sector, partner with local entrepreneurs to make payment arrangements for government agencies’ power consumption, and ensure the timely release of these funds”, Mahama noted.
