Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew Chairs UG Governing Council
Leadership transition ushers in a new era for the University of Ghana’s highest decision-making body.
A ceremony of significance
In a symbolic yet momentous ceremony held at the Chancellor’s residence, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew was officially welcomed as the Chair of the reconstituted University of Ghana (UG) Governing Council. The event, which followed the Council’s formal inauguration by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, was presided over by UG’s Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse.
New council, renewed vision
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo introduced the new Chair with optimism, emphasizing the enriched composition of the reconstituted Council. She highlighted the addition of four new government appointees, bringing a diversity of thought and experience to the table.
“There is a healthy mix of new members from diverse professional and academic backgrounds to help steer the affairs of the University,” Prof. Amfo noted, linking the Council’s role to UG’s efforts in curriculum renewal and industry alignment.
Chair Brew’s pledge of purpose
Taking the reins as Chair, Ms. Marietta Brew expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in her and underscored her commitment to collaborative leadership.
“We are here to contribute, not to interfere,” she said firmly, reinforcing her intention to foster unity within the Council and the broader University community. She reaffirmed the Council’s role in guiding UG in line with its strategic priorities while respecting its institutional autonomy.
A clear mandate from government
Ms. Brew acknowledged the directive from Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, which tasks the Council with supporting the University in producing transformative, work-ready graduates. She reassured stakeholders of the government’s respect for academic freedom and institutional governance.
“The charge from the Honourable Minister for Education has given us a clear direction—to support UG in producing quality graduates who can transform society,” she remarked.
Confidence from the Chancellor
Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse congratulated Ms. Brew and expressed full confidence in her ability to lead with wisdom and vision.
“You bring a wealth of experience and expertise, and I am confident that you and your team will offer strong leadership to guide this University to greater heights,” she said.
The Chancellor also paid tribute to the outgoing Council, recognizing their contributions in redefining UG’s strategic goals. She urged the new Council to maintain a strong partnership with government and continue efforts toward aligning academic output with global workforce demands.
Continuity and commitment
Registrar Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who also serves as Secretary to the Council, was present at the ceremony, symbolizing the continuity of governance and institutional memory. The University’s leadership expressed a shared commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and national development.
As UG embarks on a new chapter under the stewardship of Ms. Brew and the reconstituted Council, hopes are high that the University will further its mission of producing leaders and change-makers for Ghana and beyond.
