Missing BVDs -NDC demands independent audit

The National Democratic Congress is urging for an immediate independent investigation and impartial audit to uncover the circumstances surrounding the theft of the missing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits from the Electoral Commission’s headquarters.

The NDC believes that without a thorough examination of this matter, the 2024 elections cannot be considered free, transparent, and fair. This call comes after the Electoral Commission announced the suspension of three officials over the alleged theft of the BVRs.

During the ‘Moment of Truth’ series at the NDC headquarters, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, emphasized the importance of addressing the missing equipment. He expressed concerns that the EC’s handling of the situation undermines trust in the upcoming elections.

In response, the NDC has set forth clear demands to safeguard the integrity of the electoral system, including requesting an official written response to the critical questions posed by the NDC at the IPAC meeting regarding the status and recovery efforts of the stolen biometric devices.

The NDC is also calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the theft of the BVR laptops and related biometric equipment, along with a forensic audit of the voter’s register. This investigation should be conducted by an independent body, with the participation of international observers to ensure neutrality and trust.

Furthermore, the NDC is urging for a comprehensive audit of the EC’s inventory and security protocols concerning all BVR and BVD equipment to be carried out by an independent auditor. This audit is essential to maintain the integrity of all electoral materials.
