Ghana’s opposition party, NDC has decided to abstain from participating in the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency on 30 April 2024, following the passing of NPP MP John Ampontuah Kumah on 7 March 2024. The NPP is currently preparing to a new candidate for the election under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.
NDC regional Organiser Mr. Isham Alhassan stated that the party is opting out of the by-election due to concerns about resource wastage. He confirmed that the party is focusing on the general elections in December and does not want to benefit from Kumah’s death. Alhassan emphasized that any party contesting the by-election would incur unnecessary financial losses and that the party’s efforts are geared towards preparing for the December elections and supporting candidate John Mahama.
The EC has scheduled the Ejisu by-election in the Ashanti Region for Tuesday, April 30, 2024, following the announcement made during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, April 9. The necessity for this by-election arose due to the passing of the former Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, who passed away on March 7.
As both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition party gear up for the election, the NPP has taken steps to select a candidate by approving nine contestants to participate in a primary election for this purpose.
