NPP NEC confirms Farouk Mahama as PC for Yendi
The New Patriotic Party has officially confirmed Farouk Aliu Mahama as its parliamentary candidate for the Yendi Constituency in the upcoming December 7, 2024 election. Despite the violence and destruction of ballot papers during the parliamentary primary on January 27, the decision was made to uphold Aliu Mahama as the candidate. Some delegates and supporters had called for the nullification of the primary, but the National Executive Committee has decided to support Aliu Mahama as the candidate. Additionally, the party announced plans for parliamentary primaries in other constituencies where necessary, including La Dadekotopon, Akan, Aghona West, and Ejisu constituencies. The New Patriotic Party has stated that it has confirmed the incumbent Member of Parliament for Yendi Constituency, Farouk Aliu Mahama, as its parliamentary candidate for the December 7, 2024 poll.
The parliamentary primary held on Saturday January 27 in the Constituency, was characterised by violence and destruction of ballot papers, a situation which led to a decision to suspend the announcement of the results.
Some delegates and supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Yendi Constituency subsequently urged the national executives of the party to nullify the parliamentary primary for the Constituency.
However, a press release dated April 9, signed by the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua said, ” The National Executive Committee has confirmed Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.”
The release also announced the status of other parliamentary primaries.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) at its National Executive Committee meeting held on Tuesday April 9. 2024, passed the following resolutions in respect of the party’s parliamentary primaries in the five (5) outstanding constituencies in accordance with Article 12 of the Party Constitution:
1. LA DADEKOTOPON
The National Executive Committee agreed to open nominations for the conduct of parliamentary primaries in the constituency on account of the resignation of Dr. Joseph Gerald Tetteh Nyanyofio as parliamentary candidate.
2. AKAN CONSTITUENCY
The National Executive Committee agreed to open nominations for the conduct of parliamentary primaries in the constituency on account of the passing of the late parliamentary candidate, Hon. Amb. Rashid Bawa.
3. AGONA WEST CONSTITUENCY
The National Executive Committee agreed to reinstate Mr. Joseph Afankwah as an aspiring parliamentary candidate in the constituency primaries
4. EJISU CONSTITUENCY
The National Executive Committee adopted the Report of the Ejisu Parliamentary Vetting Comminee to clear all nine(9) aspirants who have duly filed nominations to contest in the primaries.
5. YENDI CONSTITUENCY
The National Executive Committee has confirmed Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.”
“The Party shall publish appropriate guidelines for the conduct of the parliamentary primaries in the outstanding constituencies,” the press release concluded.
