African Editors has learned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will select Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the second deputy speaker of Parliament and independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Fomena, as its candidate for the 2024 general elections.
According to sources within the party, this decision marks a significant turning point in the relationship between the NPP and Asiamah, who was previously expelled from the party amidst controversy. Lawyer William Kusi, secretary of the Ashanti Regional NPP reconciliation committee, confirmed this development and emphasized the importance of securing the seat and ensuring party unity for the upcoming elections.
Despite Asiamah’s departure from the NPP before the 2020 elections, his decision to join the Majority Caucus in Parliament after re-election as an independent candidate highlighted his ongoing support for the party’s goals. This move demonstrated his commitment to the party, despite the disagreements that led to his expulsion earlier.
