Nzulezu deserves help !

The community living on stilts in the Jomoro District of the Western Region of Ghana is a major tourism attraction. With over 2000 visitors at peak days paying fees to enter, the 100 year old community is living in abject poverty – only two permanent teachers for the six-classroom unit, broken down structures, no entertainment or sporting facility except a private 14-foot square ‘EcoBar’ selling alcoholic drinks, and a community Centre – all built with rattan beams.

A bigger share of tourism revenue goes to the Ghana Tourism Authority, with parts going to the District Assembly and a paltry sum going to the Community. Two churches, Catholic & Pentecost have rooms for worship. And that is all the 500 population live with. And you get there by canoes paddled by young enthusiastic school leavers who are paid 350cedis a month.

The District Assembly, GTA, the Churches on site can all do better for this community that makes one of the curious tourist destinations in Ghana.
