Otumfuo destools 3 chiefs over ‘galamsey’
In a dramatic turn of events at the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, removed the Gyaasihene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene of Sabronum from their positions, stripping them of their titles and duties.
This action was a direct response to the trio’s involvement in the illegal mining practice of ‘galamsey’, which has been a major issue the region and has received widespread condemnation.
The Asantehene’s decisive move sends a clear message that the Asante kingdom will not tolerate activities that endanger the environment and the well-being of its people.
Galamsey has long been a problem in the area, with many leaders facing criticism for either participating or turning a blind eye to the practice.
The Asanteman Council has been under pressure to take action against those involved in galamsey, leading to the destoolment of the individuals in question.
Following their removal, a new Sabronum Manhene, named Kofi Asante, has been chosen to lead the community, signaling a fresh start for Sabronum as they work to overcome the challenges posed by galamsey.
While some have praised the Asantehene’s decision as a strong stance against galamsey, others have expressed concerns about the impact on the individuals and their families who have been affected by the destoolment.
