Destoolment of Nana Amofa Twumasi II
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has removed Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No.2 in the Ashanti region, from his position. The destoolment comes after several serious allegations, including his involvement in illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey.”
Allegations against the chief
In addition to the galamsey charges, other allegations leveled against Nana Amofa Twumasi II include doubts about his royal lineage and a lack of proper oversight and accountability to his community and traditional leaders.
Hearing and guilt
The chief, who had been in power for 41 years, was found guilty after appearing before the Asanteman Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace, where he faced the accusations.
Central issue: Illegal mining and environmental impact
The primary reason for his destoolment was his involvement in illegal mining activities in the Mpasaaso community. These activities have caused significant environmental harm, including the destruction of water bodies in the region.
Asantehene’s stance on traditional leadership
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized that the chief’s actions went against the values of customs, stressing that traditional leaders must uphold the law and protect the land. He reiterated that leaders must serve as stewards of their communities and natural resources.
Recent trend of destoolment
The Manhyia Palace has recently destooled several chiefs due to their participation in illegal mining operations, signaling a continued commitment to addressing the destructive impacts of galamsey.
