Parliament reconvenes today Dec. 16

Parliament is set to reconvene today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) for its first sitting since the December 7 general elections.

The session follows an official notice from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the venue for the meeting.

The December 7 elections have significantly reshaped Ghana’s political landscape, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a parliamentary majority. Several prominent Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah-Kubi, lost their seats, shifting the balance of power in the legislature.

The NDC’s victory also extended to the presidential race, where John Dramani Mahama defeated the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Ahead of the elections, the NPP Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had called for Parliament’s recall to address urgent legislative issues. However, Speaker Bagbin had declined these requests, insisting that parliamentary activities would remain suspended until after the elections.
