Parliament tightens security ahead of Tuesday proceedings

Starting Tuesday, October 22, Parliament of Ghana has implemented strict security measures for all proceedings due to the ongoing constitutional debate regarding the status of four parliamentary seats.

The measures, detailed in a press release from Frederick Bawa (retired), Deputy Marshall of Parliament, are designed to ensure the safety of the Speaker, Members of Parliament (MPs), and staff during this sensitive period.

This announcement follows recent political developments where Leader of NDC Caucus in Parliament Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson invoked Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution, questioning the occupancy of four seats. The Speaker declared these seats vacant on October 17, but the Supreme Court intervened on October 18, suspending this ruling and allowing the affected MPs to continue their duties until a final decision is reached.

In response, Parliament has decided to strengthen its security protocols. According to the statement, all MPs, staff, and journalists will undergo thorough screening before entering the Chamber. Additionally, MPs’ bodyguards will not be allowed inside during proceedings.

These measures aim to maintain order and prevent disruptions during the upcoming sessions. Security arrangements will also include restricted parking around the Grand Arena, with MPs directed to use designated drop-off zones at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). The Ghana Police Service will assist in directing MPs and their vehicles accordingly.

MPs are required to wear their parliamentary identification tags for easy verification, with access to the Chamber beginning at 8:00 a.m. Public access to the gallery has been suspended until further notice, preventing in-person attendance at parliamentary sessions.
