Police files for injunction to stop Gen-Z demonstration

Ghana Police Service has taken legal action to halt the planned Gen-Z demonstration scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 6, 2024, in Accra, with the aim of mobilizing over 2 million young people.

The protest seeks to address the economic hardships faced by the youth, which has led to issues such as drug addiction, dangerous migrations, and recruitment into terrorist groups. In addition, protesters are protesting against heavy taxes, such as the betting tax, COVID-19 tax, sanitation tax, and increased internet data taxes imposed by the government.

Furthermore, the demonstration aims to denounce the alleged corruption and nepotism within the current administration. The court will hear the injunction application on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

In response, the organizers of the protest have vowed to defend their right to demonstrate, citing constitutional provisions that protect citizens’ rights to protest. It seems that the organizers may be inspired by the successful protests by the youth of Kenya, which led to significant changes being made by the President.
