Prof. Adei’s corruption claim: EOCO clears Roads Ministry
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has completed its investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption within the ministry.
The investigations were initiated after the Ministry requested EOCO to look into claims made by former Rector of GIMPA, Prof. Stephen Adei, regarding the role of bribes in the awarding of road contracts.
In a statement released on April 12, 2024, the Roads and Highways Ministry stated that EOCO’s findings have cleared the ministry of any wrongdoing. The statement noted that Prof. Stephen Adei’s comments were deemed to be unsubstantiated and based on a general perception of corruption in the country.
In a previous interview in October 2023, Prof. Adei had raised concerns about corruption in the awarding of road contracts, citing instances where bribes were allegedly demanded upfront. However, the ministry had refuted these claims, emphasizing their commitment to transparent and legal processes in contract awards.
Road contractors in Ghana also denied Prof. Adei’s allegations, stating that they had never experienced such demands for upfront payments. They stressed that the awarding of contracts follows a transparent and well-documented process that minimizes the possibility of corrupt practices.
The Roads and Highways Ministry expressed satisfaction with the outcome of EOCO’s investigation and reiterated their dedication to transparency and due process in contract awards.
