Prof. Francis Hasford appointed Deputy GAEC D-G
A new chapter in nuclear leadership
In a decisive leadership move, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has appointed Professor Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director General, effective Monday, June 16, 2025. This appointment follows the retirement of Prof. Dickson Adomako, who has served the Commission with distinction for 23 years and reached Ghana’s compulsory retirement age of 60.
The announcement was made official during the GAEC mid-year durbar, where the Director General, Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare, introduced Prof. Hasford to the staff, praising his extensive experience and strategic insight.
A career built on science, service, and innovation
Prof. Francis Hasford’s elevation to this high office is the culmination of a career marked by excellence, commitment, and innovation in the field of medical physics. With 17 years of experience, he has served not only in Ghana but also on international platforms, contributing to global advancements in nuclear science.
Before his appointment, Prof. Hasford was Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana. He also served as Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute (RAMSRI), one of GAEC’s premier research arms.
A global scientific footprint
Prof. Hasford’s influence goes far beyond Ghana’s borders. He is currently the President of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organizations (FAMPO), and an Executive Committee Member of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). His role as a Project Counterpart for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) highlights his integral position in the global nuclear science community.
Locally, he remains a pivotal figure, serving as an Executive Member of the Ghana Young Academy and Vice President of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics. These positions underscore his commitment to mentorship, policy, and research collaboration within and outside the scientific community.
Championing public health and nuclear awareness
One of Prof. Hasford’s most notable achievements at RAMSRI was spearheading GAEC’s flagship annual programme on cancer awareness and free screening—a vital health initiative that has reached thousands of Ghanaians. His work exemplifies how nuclear science can directly benefit public health and raise awareness about life-saving technologies.
His input on various national and international committees also emphasizes his role in shaping science-based policies, strengthening research capabilities, and advancing training in the nuclear sciences.
Words from the top: A leader for the future
At the durbar introducing Prof. Hasford, Prof. Dampare highlighted the importance of continuity and innovation. “Prof Hasford is well endowed with visionary leadership and deep technical knowledge in nuclear science and the workings of GAEC,” he stated. “He will be an invaluable addition to the team as we advance our strategic objectives of using nuclear science to better the lives of Ghanaians.”
A vision for sustainable development
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Hasford expressed gratitude and optimism:
“It is an honor to serve at this pivotal time in GAEC’s history. I look forward to discharging my responsibilities in collaboration with all stakeholders and harnessing nuclear technology for sustainable development.”
As Ghana continues to explore the peaceful uses of nuclear technology to solve challenges in health, agriculture, energy, and environment, Prof. Hasford’s leadership marks a promising new era for GAEC.
