Prove your competence now! -Martin Amidu to Bawumia
Former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has sharply criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership, urging him to provide concrete evidence of his competence in handling national security during President Akufo-Addo’s absences.
Amidu questioned the frequent praise of Dr. Bawumia by President Akufo-Addo, insisting that the Vice President must demonstrate his ability to lead with tangible results rather than relying on rhetoric. “The President’s assertion that Dr. Bawumia is the most capable person to manage Ghana’s security after his tenure must be supported by real evidence, not just words,” Amidu said.
He pointed to the ongoing violence in Bawku as a key example of Bawumia’s failure in security matters while serving as acting president. “Bawku has been in flames since October 2024, with the violence spreading to the North East and Northern Regions under Dr. Bawumia’s watch,” Amidu noted, highlighting the human toll of the conflict, which has claimed 23 lives in Bawku and 8 others in the North East Region.
Amidu criticized the government’s delayed response to the crisis, pointing out that national security meetings and curfews were only implemented after President Akufo-Addo’s return to Ghana. “Dr. Bawumia remained silent amid the chaos, preoccupied with his presidential campaign instead of fulfilling his constitutional duty,” Amidu remarked.
The former Special Prosecutor also accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of intentionally neglecting security in northern Ghana for political gain, suggesting that the government may be complicit in the resurgence of violence in Bawku as part of a “government-generated fratricide” for electoral purposes.
In conclusion, Amidu called on Dr. Bawumia to speak directly to the public, moving beyond campaign rhetoric. “Bawumia must address the nation on his security policies and achievements, and stop mimicking the style of politicians like Kamala Harris,” he said. “The ancestors are watching!”
