Registration for MPs-elect to begin tomorrow

The Parliamentary Service of Ghana has announced the start of the registration process for Members-elect of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, 2024, by Camilo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator of the Dissolution/Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk to Parliament, it was revealed that the registration will begin online on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, before transitioning to physical registration starting January 2, 2025.

According to the statement, Members-elect are required to first complete their registration online. Physical registration will then take place at Parliament House in Accra from Thursday, January 2, to Monday, January 6, 2025.

This process is part of the preparations for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament.

Key events and timelines

The Parliamentary Service has also provided a schedule for events leading up to the inauguration of the 9th Parliament. The election of the Speaker of Parliament will take place on January 6, 2025, at 11:00 p.m., with Members-elect expected to be seated by 9:00 p.m. The swearing-in of the Speaker-elect and Members-elect will follow immediately after the election at midnight.

The swearing-in of the President-elect and Vice President-elect is scheduled for January 7, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra. Members of Parliament will be transported to the venue and must be seated by 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will commence at 10:00 a.m., marking the final event in the series of activities ushering in Ghana’s new parliamentary term and presidency.

The dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament marks a significant moment in Ghana’s democratic journey.

The Parliamentary Service has urged Members-elect to adhere to the registration timelines and attend the swearing-in ceremonies promptly to ensure a smooth and orderly transition. This series of events will culminate in the swearing-in of the President-elect and Vice President-elect, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to democracy and continuity in governance.
