Remain at post until matters are resolved -GTEC to UCC VC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Prof Joseph Nyarko Boampong to remain in his position as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) until the Commission completes its investigation into the circumstances surrounding his dismissal.

The Commission emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to proper procedures in resolving the issue. Despite conflicting reports regarding a two-year extension of his term, the Commission has not received any official communication from the UCC Council confirming this extension.

The initial termination of Prof Boampong’s appointment by the UCC Governing Council on August 1, following the end of his four-year term on July 31, has sparked controversy. GTEC’s intervention highlights the importance of following due process in such matters of substantial importance.

The Commission’s statement issued on August 2 clarified that a final decision will be made once all issues are thoroughly investigated. In the meantime, Prof Boampong is instructed to continue as Vice-Chancellor until the Commission reaches a conclusion. The University management has been directed to provide all relevant documents related to the renewal and termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment by August 9, 2024.

The University Teachers of Ghana, UCC branch, and some members of the University Council have expressed opposition to the VC’s removal, calling for a reconsideration of the decision made by the Council chair.
