Retired police capos joining Mahama’s campaign

Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 elections, has received the support of three retired police officers who have gained recognition for their exceptional service in combating crime.

COP Nathan Kofi Boakye

One of these officers is COP Kofi Boakye, also known as Commander One, who has a close relationship with Mahama and there have been speculations about the possibility of him becoming the running mate for the NDC’s presidential candidate. Boakye, who previously headed the Legal and Prosecution Division of the Ghana Police Service, is highly respected and popular within the country’s law enforcement community. He played a crucial role in leading successful operations against criminals, including the arrest of infamous armed robber Ataa Ayi in 2005.

Former IGP Mohammed Alhassan

Former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Alhassan, who received national accolades in 2013, has also pledged his support to Mahama’s presidential bid. Alhassan was among the eminent figures recognized by President Mahama himself for their outstanding contributions to the nation.

COP Bright Oduro (retired)

Another retired police officer involved in Mahama’s campaign is COP Bright Oduro, the former Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Oduro, who openly endorses Mahama, left his position in 2017 amidst controversy surrounding allegations of political influence in police promotions. Oduro had acknowledged that political considerations were taken into account during the promotion process, with final approval from the president and recommendations from the Police Council. He faced accusations of involvement with land guards in illicit activities, as brought forward by Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong from Assin Central.

These three retired police officers have been actively participating in various campaign events across the country, demonstrating their support for John Mahama’s presidential aspirations. Their presence has been particularly notable during events such as the 24-hour economy walk in Kumasi and the ongoing ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Eastern region.
