Ghana loses an esteemed legal figure

Retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe, has passed away at the age of 74. His death, following a brief illness, occurred on Saturday, April 5, 2025, leaving a significant void in the country’s legal community. Justice Gbadegbe was widely respected for his dedication to justice and his unwavering commitment to ethical standards throughout his career.


A distinguished legal career

Justice Gbadegbe’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which he contributed immensely to the development of Ghana’s legal system. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009, where he served with distinction until his retirement in December 2020, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Prior to his time on the highest court of the land, he served as a Justice of Appeal from 1999 to 2009, and as a High Court judge from 1989 to 1999.


Key role in 2012/2013 election petition

One of the most notable moments in Justice Gbadegbe’s career was his involvement in the landmark 2012/2013 election petition. As one of the nine judges on the bench, he played a pivotal role in the ruling that followed the contested presidential election. His colleagues on the bench recall him as a meticulous and principled judge, one who demanded that all legal proceedings adhered strictly to established procedures. His attention to detail and unwavering commitment to fairness were defining features of his service.


A judge committed to ethical standards

Justice Gbadegbe was known for his strong belief in the importance of upholding ethical standards within the legal profession. He held firm to the view that lawyers and practitioners must always adhere to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. In a ceremony marking his departure from the Supreme Court, then Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah lauded his commitment to the country, saying, “His service to the country has been long and committed. He has brought a fire that cannot be quenched.” This sentiment was echoed by many of his colleagues, who admired his integrity, professionalism, and passion for justice.

Justice Sule Gbadegbe’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Ghana’s judicial history. His three decades of service have left an indelible mark on the legal landscape, and his commitment to upholding the rule of law continues to inspire. His legacy will be remembered by both the legal community and the people of Ghana, for whom he dedicated much of his life to ensuring justice prevailed.
