S. Africa’s Ex-Prez Jacob Zuma involved in car crash

Former South African President Jacob Zuma was involved in a car accident but emerged unscathed after a drunk driver collided with his official state vehicle, as per local news sources. A member of his party, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), alleged the crash was intentional.

Zuma, who is currently suspended from the African National Congress (ANC), is campaigning for MK ahead of the upcoming election in May. The incident took place in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal at 6:40 pm local time, with no injuries reported by the police. The driver responsible, a 51-year-old man, was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless behavior.

Musa Mkhize, MK’s election head, implied that the crash may have been premeditated. Zuma, aged 81, served as president from 2009 to 2018 amidst allegations of corruption and is provided with official protection.

The timing of the crash coincided with Zuma’s disqualification from the upcoming election due to a prior prison sentence. Results from opinion polls suggest that the ANC’s vote may fall below 50% for the first time in three decades, potentially influenced by MK’s sway, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.
