Sekondi MP sues NPP Member, Jospong, Metro TV for ₵10m

A high-profile defamation case is set to unfold in Ghana’s legal landscape, as Sekondi Member of Parliament, Blay Nyameke Armah, takes on a fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, a major business conglomerate, and a prominent media house. The suit, filed at the High Court in Accra on April 10, seeks to address what the MP calls a malicious and unfounded attack on his integrity.

Allegations of drug trafficking

At the heart of the lawsuit are defamatory statements allegedly made by Lawuratu Musah-Saka, a known NPP figure, during a broadcast of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, a subsidiary of Ignite Media Group. The statements, later circulated widely on social media, accused Armah of involvement in transnational drug trafficking, including the possession of a staggering 3,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at $350 million.

In what the MP decries as a calculated character assassination, Musah-Saka allegedly claimed that Armah had fled to a neighboring country to avoid arrest, while also insinuating that his son had been detained in connection with the alleged crimes.

Reputation in ruins’: MP fights back

In his court filings, Armah—who also identifies as a lawyer and businessman—stated that these accusations have caused irreparable damage to his reputation. He argues that the statements have exposed him to public ridicule, social exclusion, and emotional trauma, particularly at a time when he is actively serving as a parliamentarian and public servant.

“The allegations are not only false and without any basis,” the suit states, “but were made maliciously and with the intent to portray me as a criminal mastermind at the helm of a narcotics empire.”

Defendants: Jospong Group and Metro TV named

The lawsuit does not only target the speaker of the alleged defamatory content. Armah is also suing the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC)—which he believes played a role in facilitating the broadcast—and Ignite Media Group, the parent company of Metro TV. According to the MP, both companies failed to verify the facts before allowing such grave accusations to air and spread across digital platforms.

Reliefs: Apology, retraction, and ₵10m in damages

In his suit, Armah is asking the court for multiple forms of redress. These include:

A declaration that the statements made by Musah-Saka were false, malicious, and defamatory

A public apology and retraction issued by all three defendants, with equal prominence to the original broadcast

A perpetual injunction to prevent any future defamatory publications

General aggravated, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH₵10,000,000.00

Legal costs and any other relief the court may see fit.

Political and legal implications

The case adds a dramatic twist to Ghana’s political discourse, highlighting tensions within the ruling party and raising questions about media accountability, fact-checking, and the limits of free speech in political commentary. With such a high financial stake and reputational implications for all parties involved, the trial is expected to draw national attention.

What’s next?

As the case proceeds, all eyes will be on the High Court in Accra. The outcome could set a precedent for how defamatory content—especially when aired on mainstream platforms—is treated under Ghanaian law. For now, Armah appears determined to clear his name and hold those responsible accountable, both legally and publicly.
