Supreme Court to rule if Trump can run for president

The US Supreme Court has announced that it will hear a groundbreaking case to determine whether former President Donald Trump can run for president again. The case revolves around a Colorado decision to remove Trump from the 2024 ballot in that state, and the ruling of the Supreme Court will have nationwide implications.

Several lawsuits in different states argue that Trump’s involvement in the Capitol riot three years ago disqualifies him from holding federal office. The legal dispute centers on the interpretation of a constitutional amendment from the Civil War era. In response to Colorado’s ruling, attorneys general from 27 states have filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to reject it, citing potential chaos and disruption to the electoral process. Trump’s legal team contends that the decision unconstitutionally disenfranchises millions of voters not only in Colorado but also nationwide. Trump has also appealed against a decision by electoral officials in Maine to remove him from the ballot.

With the Supreme Court’s involvement in this high-stakes decision, the case has drawn comparisons to the 2000 presidential election between George Bush and Al Gore, which ultimately went to the Supreme Court. The court’s ruling could potentially impact the upcoming primary elections and the November presidential election later this year.
