Teen girls in Agotime Adedome developed obstacle avoidance robot
Teenage girls in Agotime Adedome in the Volta Region of Ghana developed an obstacle avoidance robot under “Rural girls in tech” program by Safefuture Ghana and GRAY Network.
The Project Director, Mr Newell Providence explained that while “Rural Girls In Tech” program seeks to empower young girls with strong tech skills to solve identified problems in their communities, the program is also geared towards equipping young girls with the most in-demand employability skills due to the growing field and proliferation of robots into our everyday lives to impact economic social structure of our society.
Mr. Newell Providence continued that girls with robotic and strong tech skills are more motivated to learn, and that in turn, will affect the quality of work they turn in as well as their attitudes towards learning in general. This will drastically reduce the rate of school dropouts among girls especially in the rural setups.
Participants expressed their excitement being part of the program and the desire to offer STEM causes in higher education.
Participants also stated that the project-based nature of the program has improved their cognitive development and has positively impacted their desire higher education.
SafeFuture Ghana and GRAY Network looks forward to extend this impactful intervention to other rural setups in the country to trigger the interest for STEM and better prepare young girls for STEM fields.
