Threats on Erastus: Bagbin refers Ken Agyepong to Parl Privileges Committee
Firebrand Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyepong risks of being nailed for contempt of parliament after the Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin referred him to Privileges Committee of the lawmaking house for threatening Joy FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor over testimonies he gave at Justice George Kingsley Koomson-led Committee tasked to probe unfortunate Ejura shootings by the military.
This follows a motion moved by Alhassan Suhuyini to the Speaker to refer the matter to the committee for immediate resolution.
Ruling on the motion, Rt. Hon. Bagbin said “This is the first time I’m hearing this and I refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for it to determine contempt of parliament and report back to the house. Hon. Members, be careful in your utterances so l don’t nail you”.
But, Deputy Majority Leader Afenyo Markin wants a Prima facie case established before the matter is referred to the committee”.
Meanwhile, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged media practitioners in the country to remain unwavering in the discharge of their duties despite threats from Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyepong.
Mr. Agyepong has threatened to beat Joy FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor for his testimony at ongoing Justice George Kingsley Koomson-led Committee probing the Ejura killings in the Ashanti Region.
The Multimedia Group has already dragged Mr. Agyepong to the police CID, petitioned Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, IGP and National Security Minister Kan Daapah about the outburst and intends to sue him over his alleged cash collections by some Joy FM Journalists from NPP stalwarts.
But, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday 13 July 2021 in Accra, President of GJA Roland Affail Monney said “We must remain resolute and guard against the culture of impunity that is gaining notoriety. Life of Asare Donkor must be protected at all costs”.
The latest outbursts by the Chair of Defense and Interior Committee of parliament Mr. Agyepong has been met with a backlash from the media because similar comment in the past saw the death of Tiger Eye PI Journalist Ahmed Suale.
