UniMAC-IJ unions reject termination of UGMC healthcare contract
Unions representing faculty and staff at the Institute of Journalism of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC-IJ) have expressed deep concern following the abrupt termination of the health care contract with the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). This decision, initiated by management, has sparked discontent among the workforce, prompting a collective response from the unions.
In a statement released on February 2, 2024, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Senior Staff Association (SSA), and Tertiary Education Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWUG) expressed disappointment in management’s unilateral decision to cancel the healthcare contract.
The lack of prior engagement with the unions have left many employees financially unprepared to handle their medical expenses.
The unions have issued a request for management to reconsider its decision by February 7, 2024, and to allow a two-month grace period until March 31, 2024, the statement averred.
According to the unions, this grace period is intended to provide staff with the opportunity to prepare financially for impending medical bills and facilitate a smooth transition to alternative healthcare facilities.
In addition to urging management to engage in transparent dialogue, the unions are calling for the exploration of a cost-effective and convenient alternative medical care arrangement during this transitional period. The statement warns that failure to address these concerns promptly may result in varied forms of industrial action from all staff members.
The unions emphasised the need for a swift resolution that prioritises the health and well-being of UniMAC-IJ staff. They called upon management to consider the best interests of all parties involved and engage in constructive discussions to address the workforce’s concerns.
As the deadline approaches, tensions within the UniMAC-IJ community escalate, with staff members eagerly awaiting management’s response and hopeful for a resolution that restores confidence and ensures their continued well-being.
