UPSA petitioned to remove ACP Dr. Agordzo as lecturer
A formal petition has been submitted to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), requesting the dismissal of Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, a retired Police Officer, from his role as a lecturer.
The petition, dated January 12, 2025, was filed by Kojo Otchere, who raised concerns over Dr. Agordzo’s recent public statements and alleged past misconduct during his time with the Ghana Police Service.
Allegations in the petition
The petitioner highlights recent comments made by Dr. Agordzo during a TV3 broadcast, where the retired officer allegedly encouraged junior police officers to challenge the authority of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. Dr. Agordzo was reportedly filmed saying, “Some police officers will mobilize and drive him [the IGP] out of office, mark my words. Police personnel will lock his door.” The petitioner describes these remarks as destabilizing and dangerous.
The petition argues that such comments are unfit for a leadership lecturer, as they could undermine discipline within the police force and incite instability in the country. “By advocating for a breakdown in discipline, Dr. Agordzo, who is supposed to be a leadership lecturer, was promoting chaos and lawlessness,” the petition states.
Additional allegations from RTI request
The petitioner also references information gathered through a Right to Information (RTI) request, which allegedly reveals Dr. Agordzo’s history of misconduct within the Ghana Police Service. According to the petition, Dr. Agordzo was convicted on six counts of misconduct, resulting in his removal from the Police Service. He was later reinstated by the Police Council but demoted from Superintendent to Deputy Superintendent of Police.
“For someone who was lawfully convicted on six counts of misconduct to serve as a leadership lecturer at UPSA raises serious concerns about the suitability of individuals entrusted with such roles,” the petition reads.
Call for Action
The petitioner urges the Vice Chancellor to reconsider Dr. Agordzo’s position at UPSA, citing potential reputational damage due to his alleged misconduct and controversial public statements.
“It is on these grounds—his inflammatory public remarks and his history of misconduct as outlined in the RTI request—that I respectfully urge you to reconsider Dr. Agordzo’s appointment,” the petition concludes.
Dr. Agordzo, a former senior police officer, has been a vocal critic of certain policies within the Ghana Police Service.
As of now, the University of Professional Studies, Accra, has not issued an official response to the petition.
